Parents & Teachers

Poetry can be written by all children. It really shouldn't be elitist or difficult and isn't just for kids with well-developed language skills. Poetry, like any other art form, is, at its most basic, pure self-expression; a concrete realization of a particular understanding, whether that understanding be about the world, school, or next door's cat.

Reading and writing poetry helps children develop their own creative responses to the world around them. It extends literacy skills, builds confidence and self-esteem, and introduces children to a finely-tuned sense of language. Children who learn to use their imaginations are developing a resource which they can carry with them throughout their lives. Reading and writing poetry can also help children to develop empathy and compassion, and introduces them to their own 'inner world'.

If your child has shown an interest in poetry, then please respond with lots of positive encouragement. Give them permission to write freely and without criticism, praise their efforts and stock up on the poetry books. Find out about Poetry Clubs and Poetry Workshops in your area and talk to your child's class teacher.

If you are a teacher interested in inviting a poet into your school, there are links below to relevant organizations, and Man In the Moon can also put you in touch with experienced poets working in East Sussex.
